"Three major periods of glaciation occurred in the northern Sierras during the last ice age (10,000 years ago). Rather than the regional "ice sheets" that covered much of North America the ice age manifested itself as individual glaciers forming at the highest elevations. These glaciers carved out individual valleys during their downward movement. Donner Lake, Emerald Bay on Lake Tahoe and Fallen Leaf Lake have the elongated shapes characteristic of glacial valleys."
